Remembrances

So many people felt impacted by Jeffrey Mylett. Regardless of whether they knew him, or simply felt like they knew him, many have some fond memory of him that they hold dear to their hearts. Quite a few people have contacted me with their memories of Jeffrey, and this section is dedicated to their remembrances of him. Feel free to contact me at itsayskeds@aim.com if you wish to have your "remembrance" posted here.

Remembrance One
Jenny Mylett May was Jeffrey's twin. They had two other younger siblings, a brother and a sister.
A long time friend of Jenny's who had first met Jenny in the '70s has written the following for the website:

Jenny was the most kind, gentlest, and dearest of persons. She and her husband, Jimmy, raised three fine children: a girl and two boys.  Jenny had a wonderful light-hearted disposition and found real joy in the full life that she lived.  She seemed unflappable even when health problems began to beset her, beginning with a mild stroke in the '80s and culminating in the '90s with a long bout with cancer.  She was one of the most loving individuals I have ever known.  I can't think of anyone who ever had anything negative to say about her nor can I recall anything negative that she ever said about anyone.

She was an accomplished musician with a beautiful voice.  She accompanied herself with a harp that she played exquisitely as well as angelically.  The beauty of her singing and the songs that she sang touched all who heard her.  I only met Jeff once or twice in the '70s.  She and Jeff looked like the twins they were. As I recall there was a wonderful rapport between them.  My recollection is that Jeff had the same sweet disposition and gentle manner that Jenny had.
(Thanks!)

Remembrance Two
From Dena; a fan.

I grew up in Peoria, a virtual outcast because I was
"different" and didn't fit into cliques.  One of the
ways I dealt with my isolation and escaped my misery
was by going to the movies at every opportunity.

When I saw "Godspell" I had never heard of Jeffrey
Mylett but was magnetically drawn to him on the screen
and had to know his name.  I saw the movie 7-8 times,
mostly just for him.

I had a huge crush on him--didn't know he was gay and
it wouldn't have mattered anyway.  I was just
magnetically drawn to him and wished there were more
things I could see him in.

I was sorry to hear that he died, because of course I
didn't have a clue about that or that he'd had AIDS.
All I knew was that he'd made enough of an impression
on me that when I saw his name mentioned in an
unrelated online forum, I was quite pleased and it
brought back lots of pleasant memories.

Too bad I didn't have a chance to see him in the stage
show, as that would have been something.

Nice of you to run the site, because he deserves to be
remembered.

(Thanks, Dena!)

Remembrance Three
Loving Jai Baba L.A. group from Meherazad family.

AHMEDNAGAR, INDIA          5/10/86

Dear Jeff Mylett is now with his Beloved Lord Avatar Meher Baba,
whom he was blessed to adore and glorify in songs.

Remembrance Four
From Stephen Schwartz, composer of all the songs in Godspell, except for "By My Side"

Jeffrey was a very good friend of mine.  For several years in the 70's, he had a small house walking distance from mine in Connecticut, and I often would take a walk over to his place while I was puzzling out a lyric or idea, visit with Jeffrey over tea or the like, talking about whatever was on our minds that day, and then walk back.  (Usually I was able to solve whatever creative problem I was tussling with on those walks.)  We often hung out together in those days, particularly in the summers, when we would play tennis and splash around in the pool.  Two other GODSPELL friends, Steve and Gilmer Reinhardt, also lived nearby, and all of us would often get together for fun and funny evenings.

I didn't see Jeffrey that much once he had moved to California, though every now and then we would get together when I was in LA.

As you no doubt know from other sources, Jeffrey was clever and funny, and also full of positive energy.  He was really fun to be around, and I miss him still.

Sincerely, Stephen Schwartz
(Thanks, Stephen!)

Remembrance Five
From Rachael; a relative of Jeffrey's.

I was thinking of Jeffrey today, so I Googled him on a whim. I didn't know
anything like this site existed, but I am very touched. Jeff was my mother's
first cousin, and he died when I was seven. I showed this site to my mom, and she was moved.

I have spent my life listening to his soundtrack, and as a child, acted out the play daily in my living room. My dream came true when I played Robin in high school, and felt very connected to his spirit all during the run. (I played both Robin and Peggy. The director sort of jumbled roles, and I sang "By My Side.")

Thank you for this site; you have no idea what it
means to me.

Remembrance Six
From Tony; a fan.

What a beautiful and wonderful treasure you have created.  I'm sure Jeff is smiling down from above in appreciation.

Last night I was home sick and feeling miserable.  I happened to catch the movie version of "Godspell" just as it started.  I had seen the movie when it first aired on TV in the early 70's.

I had done the show twice, and love the songs and the whole fun and passion of the performers.

After the movie ended, and I dried my tears, I thanked God for helping me feel better.  I then went online to look at the cast and find out who and where they were now.  To my extreme sadness I noted that Jeff has passed, along with 4 others of his film mates.  That made me so sad, but, after I got to thinking, I realized they all left behind a piece of work which will live on forever.  And hopefully they will inspire others to follow their heart and their dreams.  Knowing that Jeffrey was a part of "Godspell" from the very beginning made me appreciate him even more.

The magic that any cast brings to GODSPELL and also takes away from it, lives on forever within us.  I love that the movie cast of GODSPELL are captured forever having the most wonderful time of their lives.  The fact that so many, like Jeffrey, left this earth way too soon, makes it all the more bittersweet.  But sweet more then bitter.

Fans such as yourself make the memories live on and celebrate the careers of those who have given their time and energy to make some magic for us all.

Thank you for putting this all together.  To be remembered and to inspire are two of the greatest gifts we can leave behind when it is our time to go.
