GODSPELL
By LEONARD PROBST
I’m somewhat surprised at myself tonight...because this is another religious rock show. . . one of many...and I liked this one very much.
“Godspell” is an old word for “Gospel,” and the musical is based on The
Gospel according to St. Matthew. The show is a series of skits about the life of
Christ. It was conceived and directed by John Michael Tebelak.
He, and most of the cast of ten are 23 years old and
graduated from Carnegie Tech in
This their music. . . sweet rock. . . this is their style.. .today’s youth dressed up like hippie clowns and this is their view of religion. It’s anti- materialist and it ignores organized religion.
Jesus is wonderfully played by Stephen Nathan. He wears a “Superman sweater. . . and he is a “Super” man. . . as well as the son of god.. . . Joanne Jonas has a lovely, fresh voice.
At the opening the show stumbles and starts poorly. However, the music is marvelous… the lyrics clever, and there are some fine new tunes. . . The cast is out of its mind with energy and talent. “Godspell’ is a catchy show… a clever show. It’s religious rock that says “love thy neighbor” and means it.
