Godman Interview

(Cast of Parables of Godspell, including original Godspeller, Joanne Jonas. Taking on the role of Jeffrey is Dean Pitchford, who would later write Footloose.)

Through the Love Street Bookstore, I was able to purchase a copy of Godman, in which Jeffrey has a brief interview and song. To view pictures from Jeffrey's interview and performance, please click here.

"Well, I had the great fortune to be in the original company of Godspell, which is a play about Jesus, the divine clown, and his fool disciples. I was one of the fools. And then, after I had been in the show about a year, I came to India to be with Baba, and to be with his disciples, and some of the stories they told me were remarkably the things that we'd created in the show. Some things happened this way with Baba, and the way he'd work with his disciples. He would take, for instance, two people who particularly didn't get along together, you know. They'd loved each other through him, through Baba, but their personalities irritated each other. He would say with a wink in his eye, 'You...and you. Do a puppet show for me.' and they'd have to do it, cause it was his orders, and slowly they would grind each other down--their own egos down. And this would happen with us. There were two people in the rehearsal process who just did not like each other, and they were holding a broomstick for a puppet show. The puppet show was over, and one went to take the broom offstage right, the other one offstage left, to where there was a tug-of-war, and they got very furious with each other, and a fight almost happened. The next line in the rehearsal of the play was Jesus saying, 'No, no, no. Love your enemies as you do yourself.' So, you see, I'm still a fool, but I'm a disciple fool to the true Avatar and Christ of the age, Meher Baba."
